PC Issues

Em hotep, All:

This week one of my friends on my AIM list infected my PC with a malware / hijacking virus. It was someone whom I trusted and I was just bloody stupid. I should never have clicked on the link because it launched a bunch of exe's that were disguised in the link to what was supposed to be an image. As of this moment I am on my old PC. I have no master disk for Windows XP for that machine that I can find. So...I have some options. I need to go out and buy another Win XP Home Edition disk today, or the situation might be so bad that my machine ends up in the shop. I am thinking that it probably will end up there. I don't get a start menu at all.

I am hoping and praying that I have not lost months and months of work and writing because the HD needs to be reformatted. I have already spent over $80 trying to get rid of this damned malware. I will be up as soon as I can but it looks like I am going to be relegated to this machine for the time being. I really don't have the time and the money for this bullshit.

I am so upset right now. I was going to spend my weekend writing.

If you don't mind waiting a few days, you could order a Windows XP Home Edition from Tiger Direct for less than $100. If memory serves, the Win XP HE disc normally runs $200 and up.

Here's a link for Tiger Direct. Oh and the software is $89

Or if you wanna go to WIN XP Pro you can pay a lil more, say about $139

Em hotep,

Do you know what the virus (or whatever) that infected your computer is? Maybe some of us more computer-savvy geeks can help you.

*hugs for you*

Em hotep KI Niankh!

In doing a bit of research, it looks like this virus has gotten wide-spread to so many people, it's wreaking havoc in the AIM community.

Here's a couple links (that are safe) that may help (I don't know if you've looked at them or not, so sorry if they're repeats!):

AIM's help page for virii and trojans.

PC Mechanic's "AIM Virus Prevention and Removal 101"

A couple of dudes wrote a program that apparently goes in and searches around on the infected computer for anything that matches a database of known AIM virii/trojans. This program was mentioned on quite a few sites I researched on.

Trend Micro's "HouseCall" web-based virus & spyware scanner. This one was also linked to quite a few times, in conjunction with the AIMFix mentioned above.

If these don't/haven't help(ed), let me know and I'll see if I can do some more digging. *hugs* Virii and trojans are a major pain in the neck!

Good luck!

I have a Windows XP Professional reinstallation CD that came with my Dell Laptop. Would it be useful to you? I'd be happy to mail it to you if it would help.

I hope you get the computer problems straightened out quickly! Good luck!

I am sorry about that. I do remember posting about it in my journal about a week ago though.
