In the last year, white sage (Salvia apiana) was nearly wiped out by wildfires and the incredible droughts out West. Frontier, because the plant was already on the United Plant Savers (UpS)"To Watch" list, suspended the sale of the herb to consumers and have been asking people NOT to try and obtain it elsewhere, so that we can give this valuable plant ally a chance to come back.
People are self involved, selfish, greedy, self serving, and have very little inkling that as citizens of the Planet, they have a responsibility to do what is best for everyone - including the plant allies. "But I NEED this plant for smudging!" or, "But I WANT THIS! What do you mean I can't have it!!" What part of "this plant's population in the Native Southwest has been decimated DON'T you understand? It's powwow season now. Even a good number of the Native people are forgoing using it, largely because they know that we need to allow it to rebound and restablish itself. I have at least a pound of it that I purchased over a year ago and I feel guilty using any of it. I certainly won't sell it at the store until it comes back.
This year, it has been predicted that the droughts, and potential wildfires will be worse than last year. HOW can anyone of clear conscience think only of themselves and their own personal convenience?

Date: 2003-04-17 01:36 pm (UTC)However, just had another unthinking idiot call us asking if we would be interested in buying goldenseal he had. "Sure! I responded! As long as its cultivated and not wildcrafted." He seemed incensed that he had gone out and dug all this goldenseal OUT OF THE WILD, where it is endangered and we weren't interested in purchasing from him! I swear, Bella, I wanted to scream at this guy. This plant is one that has been truly to the brink of extinction for the greed and misinformation/misuse of it. Right now, this stuff is retailing for nearly $300 a pound. It is the second most expensive herb on the face of the planet - just after saffron, which is roughtly retailing for $2000 a pound. Frontier cultivates its own on its farm in Ohio, but it has been a project that has taken many years to bring to fruition. *sigh* I know this idiot is going to find a buyer for his wildcrafted herb - but at the cost to the environment, it makes me want to cry.
