It is amazing. *sigh* I really hate predjudice, and this whole bullshit of how prisoners were treated over there to soften them up screams predjudice from its very pores.
When people realize this goes all the way up the chain of command and we purge that as much as we are able, then maybe we will be able to try to retrieve something of our honour.
I am thinking that it has lees to do with prejudice (although it's obviously a factor) and more to do with revenge. Revenge for all the soldiers killed, revenge for all the American civilians who have been kidnapped, mutilated and slain for just being there. The US Soldiers couldn't "torture" these guys per se, but they could use the religious beliefs against them. Although one of my Nordic friends pointed something out to me the other day about the prisoners that i hadn't thought of before and it put a new spin on things. Supposedly the Arab people and prisoner see this a Jihad, yet when the prisoners were faced with "death" or taking off their clothes and being humiliated (which public nudity is contary to Muslim religious Law) they chose to aced to their captors wishes. So in other words, it really is only religious when the press says it is. When faced with "death" the prisoners chose to willfully disobey their religion rather than die for their beliefs. My Point again. Anytime there is a suicide bombing or some sort of violence, it's said it's the Holy Muslim fighters working against the Infidels. If this were true, then why doesn't this hold up under imprisonment? Why the change in attitude on the part of the Arab prisoners? It isn't a Holy War, at least not in their eyes. How many people in WW@ died simply for refusing to say "Heil Hitler" which would have violated their religious beliefs.yet,,this is done..and it's an outrage to be sure..but they are still alive. makes me think thr entire Jihad is a charade meant only tp incite fear. That when it comes right down to it, the average soldier isn't thinking about Glory to Allah, but Glory to himself and there is no Glory in a meaningless "death" as they thought they would have met in the prison had they disobeyed their US captors. But I also think the US shouldn't be there. Bush lied about it all and now is reinstituting the draft behind everyone's back, all the while saying he isn't.
I've heard from more than one military woman that it's common knowledge that ALL of the US women taken prisoner by the Iraqis during the 1991 Gulf War were raped.
I can tell you why he wants to bring back the draft. My husband is in the Navy and I see it like this. We live in housing that is 'free' soon that will change, we have a "self help" building where if we need to borrow a lawn mower we can for free. This october, that will be gone, medical coverage? They only cover certain things and ever changing who gets what benfits, yet my enlisted husband has to do the same amount of work and folks are getting deployed way longer than the maximum six months that it used to be. Folks no longer want to stay in the military much less join because the benifits are becoming less and less. Thus, the only way to keep soldiers would be to madatory draft them. It makes me so angry!
This whole thing is horrible, and yet this is how soldiers have acted throughout human history.
But what I want to know is - if you are going to abuse human rights and act so despicably, why why why would you be so incredibly STUPID as to take pictures of yourselves doing it!?!?!?!? These people should not only be held accountable for their loathsome acts - all the way up the chain of command - but should also be locked up for being so idiotic.
It seems pretty obvious that they had no idea they were doing something that was going to get them punished eventually, which speaks volumes about the tone being set from their commands.
