Universal National Service Act of 2003:

Title: A bill to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

President Bush is spending $28 million (see plans 1-3 at the above website for dollar amounts) to have the Selective Service system ready to report to him on March 31, 2005, and then to have the system ready for activation within 75 days. This would make the approximated date of the return of the draft June 15, 2005.

Write your legislators and tell them what you think of this bill.

It would seem one must jump to it from the home page of the site I landed upon

So, that's why I deleted links that didn't work and leave this next one for reference

Sorry for any confusion this may have caused, I bumped my head once too often and sometimes think government sites are so easily shared what with the freedom of information act and all

This cannot happen. It can't. We can't LET it. I refuse to die for Bush's BS war. I will not be a casulty in his revenge for his father.

Seriously, June 15, 2005 is about a month after I graduate from college. Who do you think would be some of the first people to get drafted? Me and my fellow graduates. I can't do that.

Thank you so much for posting this. Anyone of "draftable" age who votes for Bush in November is digging their own grave, and they need to know that before hand.

Well, I've got the mental illness to use as my excuse.

Barring that, kiss my unpatriotic ass, any government official who approves of that, and I'll send you a postcard from Ireland.

This bugs me. I really hope it doesn't fuck up my plans for after college, too.

Thing is, it wasn't Bush that started the idea going around...it was 3 democrats. They decided that, in order to "punish" Bush, they'd force everyone to serve. I guess they were figuring that if Bush reinstates the draft, people won't vote for him.

Yup, politicians are stupid.

You've got the reason wrong, though the election consequences may have been part of it. IIRC, their rationale was that those in the "lower socio-economic strata" make up an uncomfortably large percentage of enlistees in our all-volunteer military, and that a draft - enforced FAIRLY, not allowing college exemptions as were routinely made during the VN war - would bring in a more representative cross-section of American youth. They felt that the prospect of having THEIR kids on the front line would make the Republican elite less likely to involve us in fighting.

What's the other purposes? To get SHOT? Yeah, right. This guy needs to get voted out of office. Seriously. Inauguration is in January. If he gets the boot, we won't have to deal with it.

One thing I'm suspicious about, however, is that the perspective year this takes effect is 2005. It sounds like he's predicting his re-election into office. That's alright though; all of his actions during his term will turn around and strike him. The whole 9/11 council fiasco with "Condoskeeza Lice"(No, I don't like Condi Rice. AT ALL.) was just a brief sample. There's more to come.

In the meantime, I'll just get in touch with one of my state Congressman(Jerold Nadler D-NY). I hear he's a very nice man.

This is dated January 2003... where did you hear that it is being looked at now? There's been nothing in any newspaper that I've seen (I get the NYTimes and the Washington Post in my email and my mom's husband reads the Houston Chronicle front to back every day). Are you sure this is not already defeated?

I highly doubt this would ever come into fruition. When it comes down to it, the people have the ultimate say; because, even if it were to pass as a law, many people would resist it to the point of the law becoming obsolete. I know -I'd- rather go to jail than be sent to the trenches. But before that would happen, I'd move to Canada eh! ;D
