The Lakota Nation Secedes from the Occupational Government of the U.S. and Declares Independence.

I am VERY happy to see this. Russell Means is one of my heroes as a kid. If this does go through, then I fully expect other Soveriegn Indigenous Nations to follow suit.

I need to contact my brother, Bill, who is now living on the Rez in Cherokee, NC. I wonder how folks feel about it there.

when I first saw this about 28 hours ago, I was very excited as well.

The further I dug, however, has left me almost convinced that Means and his group do not actually speak for the Lakota nation. There is nothing official from anyone in any part of the US government that I can find, nor from the actual leaders of the Lakota tribes.

That said, I will definately be tuned in and trying to find out more info as it continues.

forgot to say this - I noticed something was off when none of CNN, CSPAN, and NPR had anything about it.

Ditto. It seemed to be a big story not to have any official comments...

However if it is official, and Lakota leaders back it as such, what will the U.S. government do? Sending in troops would hardly be politically correct in this day and age, with the respect for human rights and the sovereignty and freedom we so loudly proclaim for oppressed peoples...
